LOCATION

We are in the heart of splendid Tuscany, between Florence and Siena, a few kilometers from San Gimignano, on the outskirts of Certaldo. The experiences of Tuscan Food and Wine are mainly carried out in our historic Fattoria Bassetto.

Fattoria Bassetto

The Fattoria Bassetto is a former convent of the Benedictine monks dating back to the end of the 13th century. The convent was built as a resting place for pilgrims on the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route from France to Rome. At the end of the 19th century, the Benedictine monastery was purchased by the noble Guicciardini family and was converted into a self-sufficient farm. Since the early twentieth century, the Bassetto Farm has been remembered as one of the most successful farms in central Tuscany. In the second half of the twentieth century, the Farm returned to being a place of passage for all pilgrims traveling.

The cellar

The Fattoria's cellar was rebuilt in 1880, becoming the second largest winery in Tuscany. It is a rare example of a cellar built in a cave, which contains a long gallery of about 100 wooden barrels. It is said that in the Middle Ages this winery was actually a secret tunnel that connected the Benedictine monastery to the nearby village. The winery remained active until about 40 years ago.
